Portoferraio

Portoferraio is renowned for its many attractions, both naturalistic and cultural. In fact, in the historic centre, there is the beautiful fortified coastal citadel called “Il forte Stella”.  Its position is at the top of the promontory and from there it dominates the entire port of Portoferraio from the north. We recommend a visit to this citadel to admire the natural beauty of the whole island of Elba.

Furthermore, at the end of the dock is the Linguella tower, which can be visited and hosts exhibitions.

In addition to the evocative beauty of the historic centre, Portoferraio also offers some of the island’s most beautiful beaches. This stretch of coastline is very suggestive thanks to the contrasting colours of the turquoise sea and the green Mediterranean scrub.

The Port of Portoferraio

The port is situated on the northern coast of the island of Elba, in the wide bay of the same name, and consists of two distinct parts: the port proper and the roadstead. It is accessible 24 hours a day in all weather conditions and has the particularity that ships entering the port must keep to the left and give precedence to those leaving. The basin of the roadstead is about 2000 metres wide and well protected from bad weather.

The Port’s services

Directly in the port, in front of the quays, is the Port Services Centre, where the ticket office and toilets can be found.

The port is essentially in the centre of Portoferraio, so passengers waiting to catch their ferry or when disembarking can find all kinds of public facilities and shops. In the vicinity of the port there is also and extensive public transport connection.

There is also a special service for disabled people and people with reduced mobility.

On the occasion of the arrival of cruise ships, a reception desk for cruise ships is set up at the foot of the ship’s stairs, where information material on the city and the island is distributed.
